Last weekend we had an early start as we were off to the Mutianyu part of the Great Wall. After power naps on the mini bus we arrived about 2 hours later and made our way up through the trees to the wall Beijing there was the option to get a cable car up but we decided to brave the heat and admire the scenery from the ground instead! A few of us walked the whole length of the wall and past the last tower of the restored section to the non-restored part Beijing it was good to have experienced the two elements. This part of the wall also had a toboggan ride down which was potentially the highlight of the weekend!
My last week at work was pretty quiet. Unfortunately our supervisor had to visit the company’s other office in Inner Mongolia so we didn’t get to have our meeting with him to discuss the progress of our tasks. We were continuing what we had done last week, contacting investors and also now taking further steps to provide more information to those who were interested. We were still taken to lunch with the company everyday and although our other colleagues’ English was limited, they were very keen to practice with us! Our supervisor called us on Friday and told us that he was sorry he wasn’t able to make it back to Beijing to say goodbye to us but that we could have Monday and Tuesday off work to make sure we had seen everything in Beijing we wanted to. When we left we were given gifts by the company to say thank you and good bye.
We went to Wangfujing snack street Beijing renowned for its weird and wonderful food – last Monday evening to see what delights they had to offer. We were faced with scorpions, spiders, snake, monkey, cat.. the list was endless! I was only brave enough to try snake however some of the other interns were a little more adventurous. It was also our last Juicy on Wednesday night following the networking event that CRCC had put on for us – a very sad night for us all. The following evening we went to have drinks at Atmosphere Beijing a bar on the 80th floor of the tallest building in Beijing, however vertigo set in and I couldn’t quite bring myself to go right to the window but the views of Beijing at night were incredible.
Before we knew it our last weekend in Beijing was upon us. After spending Saturday afternoon walking round the hutong area, eating dumplings and relaxing by the lakes, following the success of the KTV organised by CRCC a few weeks ago, a group of us decided to go back ourselves and had another tuneful night Beijing I don’t think the staff knew what had hit them. On Sunday we visited the Temple of Heaven and did some last minute shopping at the Pearl Market nearby.
Having been given Monday and Tuesday off work I decided to go to the 798 Art district. Although not having realised the majority of the galleries were closed on a Monday it was still cool to wander round and see all the different sculptures that lined the streets. Monday night was the leaving drinks for everyone which was a great opportunity for all of the interns to have a last night together as the bar it had been organised at was occupied mainly by us! We all headed to a club in Sanlitun afterwards and as per usual, ended the night with a McDonalds. I spent Tuesday packing and making sure I had everything organised for my extra travelling. In the afternoon I went to meet my roommate after she’d finished work and we went to a german brewery and sat and drank beer for hours before heading back to get ready for our last meal with everyone. We went to the same restaurant as CRCC Asia took us to for our welcome dinner and ordered enough food to last a lifetime but managed to plough through it and ended up having a really great last night.
It was sad to say goodbye to everyone but I’m sure many of us will keep in contact. I’ve had an amazing month in Beijing and am glad that I still have some time left in China Beijing I’m leaving Shanghai tomorrow evening to go to Xian and then Pingyao before flying back to the UK next week. I hope that my blogs have been a good insight to what your internship in Beijing could be like – you are guaranteed to have an incredible time!
