Why choose a China internship? 

Over the past century China has endured much political, social and economic upheaval, and has emerged from this turbulence to become the world’s fastest growing economic superpower. From the fall of the last imperial dynasty in 1911 to the economic ‘opening up’ in the 1980s, which sparked China’s meteoric global rise, the country has become a subject of significant global interest and investment. As its economy has outstripped those of many regional and international powers, China has been transformed into a dynamic, energetic and supremely confident nation powered by an optimistic population. Recent triumphs such as the successful hosting of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing have served to cement China’s place as a hugely important member of the global community of nations.

China fact file:

• China is the fourth largest country in the world, covering a surface area of 9.6 million square metres.
• The landscape is highly diverse, comprising of fertile lowlands, towering mountain ranges and arid, hostile deserts. The longest river is the Yangtze (6275km) and the highest mountain is Qomolongma, or Mount Everest (8850m), which lies on the Nepalese border.
• Its population is around 1.4 billion, making it the most populous country on earth.
• It has more speakers of English as a second language than America has native English speakers.
• It is bordered by no fewer than fourteen other countries, with many of which it shares close economic and trade links.
• China’s main exports are tea, clothing, fossil fuels and minerals.
• It is one of the biggest exporters in the world and its trading partners include the US, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union.
• Since China opened up to the world economy in 1978, its GDP has grown by roughly 10% annually, and its domestic economy is now the second largest in the world.
