Sector: Green Tech
City: Beijing 北京
Programme type: Generation UK China Internship Programme, July 2017 (2 months)
As a Sustainable Development student, China has always enticed and fascinated me. Its continued reliance of Coal power and status as the World’s largest emitter of carbon emissions seemingly contradicts its commitment to green technology and ambitious carbon reductive targets. Recognising China as a rapidly emerging superpower, and the crucial role it will play in the transition to renewable energy, the opportunity to gain international work experience there was one I could not surpass.
I worked within a company called the IEEPA (International Ecological Economy Promotion Association), a government approved think tank researching and advocating for simultaneous economic and environmental development. Given the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative is at the fore of most business conversations, with its potential to completely transform Global trading, I was part of the International Development team working on the effective roll out of environmental policies under this directive. As an intern, I was responsible for the organization of a business trip to Switzerland to discuss the collaborative opportunities of domestic and foreign enterprises under the “Silk Road” economic model.
My company set me the challenge of organising a certain quota of meetings and if I achieved this I would be able to attend the trip through which we would travel across Switzerland. Approximately 12 hours before our departure I obtained confirmation of the last meeting. I was fortunate enough to attend private meetings in the UN headquarters of Geneva with various officials, and other key international organisations such as the IISD. This not only gave me an insight into the major discussions and developments being had in environmental policy, but how these game changers in the field operate. Those few days marked the biggest steps in my career and this wouldn’t have happened without the support of CRCC Asia and Generation UK.
Beyond the internship, I made friends for life which span the globe and got to experience a culture that was completely new to me. I fell in love with China, and its wonderful quirks and contradictions over my two months in Beijing. I am convinced I will not only return to Beijing, but pave my career there having received a graduate job offer from my host company.
For anyone considering an internship with CRCC Asia, I cannot recommend the service enough. You will enhance your CV in ways unimaginable, whilst simultaneously embarking on one of the best experiences of your life.
