Access & Mobility

Q: How accessible is public transport for people with disabilities?

  • A: Mumbai’s public transport system is extensive, but accessibility can be a mixed experience. Local trains and buses are crucial for daily commuting, but many are not fully equipped for people with mobility issues. While some low-floor buses have been introduced, and the metro system is gradually improving accessibility, older stations and the high passenger volume, especially during rush hour, can make it tough for those with disabilities. However, the city is working towards making transport more inclusive over time.

Q: Are sidewalks pedestrian-friendly for differently abled individuals?

  • A: Mumbai’s sidewalks can be a challenge for pedestrians with disabilities. While some areas, especially newer developments, have broader and better-maintained paths, many streets have uneven sidewalks, with obstacles like vendors or parked vehicles. It’s not uncommon to see areas that need improvement, but the city is slowly addressing these issues as part of its infrastructure upgrades.

Q: Are public buildings accessible for differently abled individuals?

  • A: Mumbai has a mix of modern and older buildings, and accessibility can vary. Newer structures tend to include ramps and wider entrances, but some older buildings may not have these features. Accessible restrooms are becoming more common in public spaces, but there’s still room for improvement. As the city continues to modernize, more facilities are being built with accessibility in mind.

LGBTQIA+ Norms

Q: Is Mumbai LGBTQIA+ friendly?

  • A: Mumbai is one of India’s more progressive cities when it comes to LGBTQIA+ inclusion. There’s a growing network of support groups, events like the Mumbai Queer Azaadi March, and increasing visibility of LGBTQIA+ individuals in media and everyday life. That said, like in many places, societal acceptance can still vary. Some people may face challenges in more conservative spaces, but overall, the city is moving in the right direction.

Q: What legal protections exist for the LGBTQIA+ community?

  • A: The decriminalization of Section 377 in 2018 was a major win for LGBTQIA+ rights in Mumbai, and while this has opened the door to greater acceptance, comprehensive protections in areas like employment and housing are still developing. Many companies and organizations are becoming more inclusive, which helps foster a more welcoming environment.

Race and Ethnicity

Q: How diverse is Mumbai’s population?

  • A: Mumbai is one of India’s most culturally diverse cities, with people from all over the country and the world. You’ll find a wide variety of languages, traditions, and communities, all coexisting in this bustling metropolis. However, this diversity sometimes comes with its own challenges, such as occasional misunderstandings or stereotyping, but these instances tend to be rare.

Q: Do foreigners face racism in Mumbai?

  • A: While Mumbai is generally welcoming to foreigners, some may encounter stares or assumptions based on their ethnicity. These interactions are usually more a matter of curiosity than prejudice. That being said, most people in Mumbai are friendly and open to learning about different cultures, so foreigners tend to find the city fairly easy to navigate.

Religious Tolerance

Q: What religions are prominent in Mumbai?

  • A: Mumbai is home to a wide range of religious communities, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, and Jews. You’ll see temples, mosques, churches, and other religious sites throughout the city, reflecting Mumbai’s rich cultural diversity. Major religious festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid are celebrated with great enthusiasm, and visitors are often welcome to join in.

Q: How should I behave when visiting religious sites in Mumbai?

A: It’s important to approach religious sites with respect. Visitors should dress modestly, remove their shoes when entering, and follow any specific customs or guidelines at each site. Mumbai’s religious sites are welcoming to those who want to learn about the city’s diverse faiths, but being mindful of traditions is always appreciated.

"Interning abroad through CRCC Asia has taught me the importance of networking and being able to sell myself as an asset. Therefore, one of the most important aspects of the experience was my ability to build a professional network of contacts all over Shenzhen as well as other parts of China. Efficiently leveraging this network will help me during my post-graduation career search. Though I may decide not to seek a career in China, many of my new network contacts have other connections all over the world. So, doors may be opened to things and places I never dreamed possible."
